A Hearthstone company - serving Danbury, CT

Before & After Gallery - Hearthstone Chimney Co.

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Chimney Cleaning Before & After in Danbury, CT

We’re not big on flashy promises. After 42 years in Danbury, we’ve learned that a homeowner with a flashlight and a honest look at what’s inside their chimney can judge our work better than any slogan. The photos below show what we find, what we do, and what you get when we’re done. No filters, no staging, no surprises.

Recent Transformations

Level-3 Creosote Buildup, Candlewood Lake Area

Thick, shiny black creosote coating the interior of a chimney flue before professional cleaning
Before: Glazed creosote accumulation reducing flue diameter and increasing fire risk
Same chimney flue after mechanical cleaning showing clean masonry and full diameter restored
After: Flue restored to full diameter with Level-2 camera documentation

The homeowner near Candlewood Lake had been burning seasoned hardwood for three winters without a sweep. What started as a standard cleaning turned into a full deglazing job once we got our camera up and saw the shiny, tar-like coating. We used mechanical rotary whipping and hand brushing to remove the glazed creosote, then ran a Level-2 inspection to confirm the flue was clear and sound. The photos went straight to the homeowner’s phone. Burning season started two weeks later with a clean chimney and a documented bill of health.

Blocked Flue from Animal Nesting, Danbury West Side

Twigs, leaves, and nesting material packed into a chimney flue opening
Before: Active bird nesting blocking flue and creating carbon monoxide hazard
Clean chimney flue with stainless steel chimney cap preventing future animal entry
After: Fully cleared flue with Gelco cap installed to prevent re-entry

A family on the West Side called because their fireplace was smoking back into the living room every time they lit it. We found a partially collapsed bird nest packed above the smoke shelf, plus enough debris to block half the flue. We removed the nesting material, swept the flue, and installed a Gelco stainless steel cap with proper screening. No more smoke in the house, and no more birds treating their chimney like a rental property.

Heavily Soiled Smoke Chamber, Shelter Rock Area

Thick black soot coating the smoke chamber walls above a fireplace damper
Before: Soot-saturated smoke chamber reducing draft efficiency
Smoke chamber with smooth parge coat applied after cleaning to improve draft and safety
After: Cleaned and parged smoke chamber for improved draft and safer operation

This Shelter Rock fireplace had never had the smoke chamber addressed. The walls were coated with years of soot and partially deteriorated parging, which meant poor draft and a potential fire hazard where creosote could accumulate in the corbels. We hand-cleaned the chamber, then applied a HeatShield smoke chamber parge coat to smooth the walls and improve flow. The difference in draw was immediate. The homeowner said the fire finally “sounded right” for the first time since they bought the house.

Flue Liner Deterioration with Heavy Deposits, King Street Corridor

Cracked clay flue liner with heavy creosote deposits visible through gaps
Before: Cracked clay liner with creosote infiltration into chimney structure
New DuraFlex stainless steel liner installed with proper top and bottom connections
After: New DuraFlex stainless liner with proper top and bottom connections

A King Street homeowner called for a cleaning and mentioned occasional bits of “sand” falling into the firebox. What we found was a deteriorating clay liner with cracks allowing creosote to seep into the masonry and pieces of liner spalling off. We cleaned what we could, then recommended a DuraFlex stainless steel liner rather than a band-aid repair. The installation took one day. Now they’ve got a fully contained flue, a warranty they can hold in their hand, and photos showing exactly why the old liner had to go.

Fireplace Insert with Creosote-Cooled Chimney, New Fairfield Border

Insulated chimney liner packed with flaky creosote reducing airflow
Before: Insulated liner packed with flaky creosote from slow-burning insert
Clean insulated liner with proper rain cap and termination visible
After: Clean liner with proper termination and airflow restored

Homeowners near the New Fairfield line had been running their wood insert on low overnight burns for six years, thinking the “sealed” system meant less maintenance. The insulated liner was packed with flaky creosote from top to bottom because the insert never got hot enough to drive complete combustion. We pulled the insert, cleaned the liner with rotary equipment sized for the smaller diameter, and reinstalled everything with proper clearances. We also talked them through better burning practices. Slow and low saves wood, but it builds creosote. There’s a balance, and now they know where it is.

Commercial Flue Cleaning, Downtown Danbury Restaurant

Heavy grease and soot accumulation in a commercial kitchen exhaust flue
Before: Grease and soot accumulation in commercial kitchen exhaust flue
Clean commercial flue with dated inspection tag and certification documentation
After: Clean flue with dated inspection documentation for insurance and fire marshal records

A downtown Main Street restaurant needed their kitchen exhaust flue cleaned for insurance renewal. The buildup was heavier than expected, with grease hardening into a shell in the horizontal sections. We scheduled the work for their closed day, brought in commercial-grade rotary equipment, and cleaned the full run from hood to termination. We provided dated photos and a written report for their fire marshal file. Their insurance agent accepted the documentation without follow-up questions. That’s the kind of paperwork that keeps a kitchen open.

What Every Project Has in Common

Whether it’s a century-old masonry flue in the Hayestown district or a modern system in a newer development off Route 7, our process doesn’t change. We inspect before we quote. We photograph what we find. We explain what you’re looking at in plain English, not jargon. We do the work with professional-grade materials from DuraFlex, HeatShield, Gelco, Olympia Chimney, Famco, and Copperfield. Then we document the result and back it with our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. No arguing. If it’s not right, we come back.
